The Morgan Academy Senators took their first lumps of the 2020 football season on Friday, Sept. 25, falling on the road to the Patrician Academy Saints 50-27.

The non-regional loss to the now 4-1 AISA Class AA Region 2 Saints, dropped the AISA Class AAA Region 2 Senators to 4-1 overall. The Senators remain undefeated, however, at 2-0 in regional play.

“We had a rough night,” said Morgan Academy head football coach and athletic director Danny Raines. “They (Patrician) are a really good team. Our kids kept battling even though we were down. This is a great group of kids. I’m looking forward to getting back to work to get ready for Valiant Cross.”

On the positive side, last Friday’s game marked the second in a row that the Senators got every player into the game, according to Raines.

Morgan Academy put together 268 yards in total offense, 180 yards on the ground and 88 yards through the air.

For the Senators: Andrew Thomas completed nine of 20 passes for 88 yards. Josh Brown had six carries for 73 yards and two touchdown runs of 3 yards and 33 yards; John Allen Ingram had six carries for 69 yards and a 22-yard touchdown run; Chris Gardner had a 5-yard touchdown run; Cink Minter had three receptions for 31 yards; and Wade Mason kicked three point after touchdowns.

Holt Utsey had 14 tackles on the night (10 solo and four assists). And Cobb Beers caused a fumble that was recovered by Allen Lightfoot for the Senators.

“Rough night” was right for Morgan Academy. The Saints were up 16-0 with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.

Ingram got the Senators on the scoreboard with a 22-yard touchdown run with about 11 minutes left in the second quarter. A 2-point play failed.

But the Saints took a 22-6 lead with 1:25 left in the half.

The Saints upped their lead to 30-6 early in the third quarter. And things were about to get much worse for Morgan before they would get better.

The Saints upped the lead to 36-6 with 4:46 left in the third quarter. And they upped it again to 44-6 with 11:50 left in the game.

Morgan would light the scoreboard with a 5-yard Gardner touchdown run and Mason point after to make it a 44-13 ballgame with 10:07 left in the fourth quarter.

But while the late touchdown was a positive for the Senators, the satisfaction was short lived as the Saints made it a 50-13 ballgame with about five minutes to go in the contest.

Still the Morgan Academy Senators had fight left in the tank and Brown scored on touchdown runs of 3 yards and 33 yards. Mason added the points after touchdown to make it a 50-27 final.

The senators will host the AISA Class AAA Valiant Cross Warriors in a non-regional bout at home on Friday, Oct. 2.

In other AISA football action, the 0-6,0-2 Class A Region 2 Meadowview Christian School Trojans fell on the road to non-regional opponent the Southern Prep Rangers 48-6 on Friday, Sept. 25. The Trojans will play non-regional opponent the Autauga Generals on the road on Thursday, Oct. 1.
