Volunteers at the Temple Gate Seventh Day Adventist Church on Franklin Street gave out food on Saturday to hundreds lined up in cars around the block.

Food giveaways are a normal mission for Temple Gate, several times a month since 2009. But Saturday was different. The church gathered volunteers from around Alabama and gave food on what is their Sabbath, when they usually spend the day inside worshiping, Pastor Cody Miller said. But because of COVID-19, the congregation moved their service – and purpose – outside.

“This way, we can get involved and engage the community and still be socially distanced,” Miller said. “We can serve the community and fulfill the purpose of our church.”
