The Selma Police Athletic League (PAL) recently held a ribbon cutting for its newly opened playground.

The playground was funded under the direction of Callie Nelson from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Office.

The center's gymnasium also underwent renovations with the help of donations from Selma Health and Rehab, which held its own ribbon cutting on June 22.

PAL operates under Det. Dorothy Cowan and offers athletics and tutoring for kids from ages 7 to 17. PAL has basketball teams for boys and girls and sponsors community events in Selma.

According to PAL's Facebook page, it was founded in 1998 with the goal of "building positive relationships between police officers and community youth with the goal of 'filling playgrounds, not prisons.'"

Selma PAL is part of the national Police Athletic League organization.
