Avis Williams II

Avis Williams is the superintendent of Selma City Schools.

Welcome to July! This month is going to be incredibly busy and also quite amazing for Team Selma. X-SEL Summer Learning is coming to an end which gives us just a few weeks to prepare for our scholars to return to school this fall.

During the month of July, look to learn about vaccination opportunities for our scholars and any Team members who need them. We appreciate our partnership with Rural Health Medical Program and with their support we will offer Covid-19 vaccines for anyone 12 years of age and older. Selma High School will be the location and additional details are being planned to be shared soon.

Also, this month our Framework for Excellence project teams will continue meeting to update our strategic plan in preparation for the relaunch later this fall. As part of this work, we will host a strategic planning summit to share our goals and direction publically. This will give the entire Selma community a chance to learn more about the plan and to provide feedback that will then inform the completion prior to the official relaunch.

July also means that it’s time for families to register for the upcoming school year. We are pleased to introduce an online platform for this that starts this week. If you are a former Knox student be sure to register for either Clark, Edgewood, Meadowview or Payne Elementary and let us know if you need transportation. Check out each school’s social media or webpage for information on their Academy of Academic Excellence, school supplies, how to join the PTO and important upcoming dates.

Finally, we will continue to promote our new Saints Virtual Academy (SVA) and to accept students. Virtual learning will allow our scholars and families the unique opportunity to own their learning. The pandemic taught us that being flexible while providing choice are part of what learning must look like as we move forward. The great thing about SVA is that in addition to a wide variety of classes, scholars will also have full access to dual enrollment, advanced placement, CTE courses, sports and extracurricular activities. Register today so that we can complete student schedules.

More details about all of this can be found on our website and our social media outlets. Additionally, please join Team Selma. We currently have several vacancies and plenty of partnership opportunities. We are stronger together!

Fortunately, we are seeing an overall decline in our Covid-19 numbers although there are some spikes occurring. We remain optimistic about resuming a sense of normalcy during our upcoming school year. Although the state mask mandate expired, for now Team Selma will continue to require masks when entering our schools and offices. We encourage you to join us in Doing Our Part Everyday. Stay safe and be DOPE!
