James Perkins Jr. is mayor of Selma.

The Selma City Council and Mayor James Perkins Jr. are at odds over the 2022 budget.

At the Sept. 23 work session, Council President Warren “Billy” Young announced that the budget will be ready to vote on at the Sept. 28 council meeting. The new fiscal year starts Oct. 1.

Perkins interjected that it is his job to present a budget to the council, and he had not yet done so. Young responded that the council assumed that the proposed budget given to the council several weeks ago was the mayor’s budget. The council has been working on adjusting that budget for several weeks.
