Mike Lewis at Edmund Pettus Bridge

Selma resident Mike Lewis has spearheaded efforts to light the Edmund Pettus Bridge. File photo.

Plans to light the Edmund Pettus Bridge continue with a push now to raise $700,000 to pay for installation of the LED lights.

The project is estimated to cost $2.5 million, but organizer Mike Lewis told Rotary Club of Selma on Monday that design work has been donated, saving millions and leaving the community to come up with about $700,000 to hire a contractor to complete the project.

While spearheaded by Lewis, the lighting efforts have been helped along by the Selma Redevelopment Authority and Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth and Reconciliation.
